The Government

The core objective of these clubs is to teach, educate, create awareness and impart knowledge & skills of social media to the university students. This will ensure students and lecturers understand how to tap into the potential online and approach social media as a business & communication tool and a teaching aid to lecturers. This is meant to revolutionize learning in institutions of higher learning because it will change the how and when lecturers create and share content with the students online and on social media specifically. These clubs will enhance collaboration, exchange of ideas among the students and the industry and nurture creativity because students especially shall be exposed to the limitless possibilities online and they’ll also learn how to tap into all that potential therein. Besides that we shall also use the platform to sensitize university students and youths on responsible online behaviour and how to use social media as a PRO. All this is meant to ensure the youths engage properly online especially regarding creating and passing hate messages online in this election period.

This project will help various government ministries and bodies achieve their core objectives in the following ways;

Boosts the economy– Social media presents an easy and free to use platform that can spur entrepreneurship. Understanding how to leverage on these platforms provide youths in Kenya a chance to sell, seek suppliers and connects Kenyans to opportunities, information and contacts within and abroad. These platforms enhance collaboration between people globally thus opening up students to the limitless opportunities will enhance and boost trade, exchange of ideas and innovation. Social media will also create jobs as firms seek to engage the services of qualified personnel with the understanding of social media and also enhance trade. Therefore if university students understand how to leverage on the potential we shall have enhanced the economy of this country.

Social development- First of all social networks enhance cohesiveness among Kenyans as we seek to connect with everyone. Social media has been used to share information almost in real time. Wanadamu a non-profit blood drive/n start up leverages on social media to match blood donors to those who need blood. Through social media we can also expose the ills happening to the society and handle problems faster, case in point the Kenyans for Kenya initiative which raised money for those starving in Turkana relied on social media for fundraising, Bring Zack Back home is also another campaign that relied on social media to raise money for the physically handicapped. The above are instances where social media has been used for the good of the society and we could unlock more potential if the youths in this country understood how to use social media to mobilize resources, create awareness and thus solve the problems in the society.

Leadership & governance – Social media boosts citizen engagement because for the first time in history, the transaction costs of bringing people together to discuss, facilitate and implement new policy are approaching zero. Previously, it would have been too costly and time-consuming to involve most citizens in a debate and decision on a public policy issue. Social media now enables public discussion and decision-making like never before. It enables a brave new world of public policy, public engagement and public decision-making. The optimum goal of democracy is government for the people by the people. Secondly it allows government to share information, opportunities and policy guidelines with external partners such as universities and all Kenyans or with the public. Social media also helps the government keep pace with fast moving events, monitor trends and respond as well as harness the ideas of the public to support your mission.
